My husband and I were traveling on business, and yes, the business of music for business. A meeting took us to Appalachia, specifically the Great Smokey Mountains. Parts of our journey reminded me of the upper Midwest…the rolling hills covered in hardwoods and evergreens with steep rock walls created by man and nature. Other parts of our journey reminded me that even in that beautiful countryside, there was something I could learn about my business from someone else that wasn’t even IN my business. Here’s what happened:
We’d stopped for lunch on our way to the airport, got off the interstate and eventually off the side road and found a very unique looking cafe. We were quickly escorted to a table in a small dining room next to a large window, the view from which was dwarfed by the view inside. That little room was packed with personality that went far beyond the deep red walls and leopard patterned carpet. The walls were decorated with wild game trophy heads, African shields and an extremely large and colorful landscape painting among other things. The open beam ceiling was painted white providing a perfect background for the bear skin displayed on it. Marilyn Monroe smiled down on the room and seemed right at home with a movie poster from “Back To The Future”. And the food? It was absolutely fabulous in the same eclectic fashion as the decor.
So here’s the question someone in my business would ask: what kind of music works here? The answer: contemporary instrumental! Not smooth jazz, not new age spa music and certainly not anything you would hear in an elevator. New contemporary instrumental music as unique as everything else in that little cafe. The detail of the music brought it all together. The music didn’t have to match the decor, the menu or the price point. It just had to go. Without a doubt, the music was selected by the same person or people who selected each time in the café and each item on the menu with an assist from someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of music.
If you’re challenged with picking music that doesn’t match but goes, consider scheduling a music consultation appointment with Pridham Electronics. We’ll ask you a few questions and match you up with one of Mood Media’s music consultants who will create a custom music program for you.
